Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is considered recessed?

Recess can be a depression in the floor or a situation where the whole vestibule is being covered.

2) What do I use to trim down the hard PVC matting material?

A circular saw or jigsaw with a fine tooth blade designed to cut plastic laminate.

3) What is surface mounted application?

Surface mounted mats are those that usually have a tapered transition edge to reduce the risk of tripping. Some can be attached to the mat and there are some that actually get attached to the floor.

4) Why use rubber backed mats versus vinyl backed mats?

The biggest difference between vinyl and rubber will always be the cost. Vinyl backed mats are more economical. In initial performance they both are very good but rubber backed mats typically last longer. If you need a mat that can be stored for long periods of time and put out on increment days then rubber mats are the ones that lay flat the fastest. Vinyl backed mats can be adjusted into custom lengths much easier than rubber backed mats.

5) Why Carpet tiles?

The best part about carpet tiles is the ease for which you can replace worn traffic patterns. The downside it the amount of seams in a carpet tile application, although they will become less noticeable with time they never completely become invisible.

6) Why Use Roll Goods over Tiles?

Rolls goods are usually cheaper than tiles but when a wear traffic pattern appears or a stain you are forced to replace all the material. It usually will have a lot fewer seams.

7) How much matting do I need?

Most studies say that to achieve the best containment of debris you need 15' to 18' of walk off area. This can be achieved by the three zone system: where you have a mat outside, one in an airlock and then another one in the lobby. But many people simply install 15' worth of runner mats inside lobby.

8) What terms should I know?

Since some mats are very directional, we like to use terms like width and traffic direction. Traffic direction is the dimension someone walks across the mat to get into your facility. Example: you have a double door entrance ( which usually measures 6' 0" across ) and you want the mat to extend from the door into your lobby 10 feet. Normally that mat would measure out 6' 0" wide X 10' 0" traffic direction.

9) How close to my door should I put the mat?

The recommendation is always to put the mat as close to the exterior threshold as possible that way anyone walking into your facility steps on the mat first and not slippery tile. Make sure you check that you have enough clearance for any door that may need to swing over the mat.
